John recieved his letter and a letter of introduction form Mr. Young. He sent Mr Young his poem of "The Kindling Arrow-An ajibway folk-tale of the Sun -Eclipse". The prospectus of the "Smokers' Companion " looks very attrative and promsing. He needs comments on "The Gallows-Bird". He discusses his feeling on the poem. He Spoke To Joseph Campbell about the poem to help in finding an illustrtor. Discusses how they live in Long Island.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
